SCSC: AI in a Safety Workflow

You’ll leave with a practical framework for bringing AI into your development process while keeping humans in control, your evidence auditable and your safety arguments intact.

Trusted AI: How to Make AI-Generated Code, Tests and Requirements Fit for Safety-Critical Software Development

AI now writes requirements, code and test cases in a fraction of the time engineers needed in the past. In safety-critical development, speed isn’t the hard part. The hard part is trust. How do you show an assessor that an AI-generated artifact is correct and complete, and that you can trace it back to its source? How do you keep the AI’s speed without giving up the rigor that ISO 26262, DO-178C, IEC 61508 and EN 50128 require? AI is probabilistic. The same prompt can produce a different result tomorrow, and the model can’t fully explain why it produced a given artifact. Safety standards expect the opposite: evidence that is deterministic, reproducible and explainable. This talk shows how to bridge that gap. AI output is never trusted on its own merits. It becomes trusted only after independent, deterministic verification. Formal requirement checks, formal verification, requirements-based testing, coverage analysis and traceability give the same answer every time, and each result can be explained to an assessor. These methods are not new. In the past, though, they were slow and expensive because engineers had to formalize requirements, write test cases and set up verification projects by hand. The talk explains why this is changing. AI can now take over much of that preparation work, while the deterministic checks stay in charge of the verdict. As a result, rigorous verification is becoming much easier and faster.
